THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF LINCOLN UNIVERSITY

    Lions:

It is with profound sorrow that I greet you this month. I have the heaviest of hearts. Violence has ripped into the soul of our community. It has left us grief-stricken, deeply troubled, confused, anxious, and even angry. Today I share my February update, as was planned. But instead of sharing the content I planned I am left, quite honestly, without knowing what to say.

First, I will say to the family of Jawine Evans, I express condolences on behalf of the Alumni Association of Lincoln University. You should be planning his graduation celebration this semester and instead you are left planning a funeral. You have our deepest, most heartfelt sympathies.

To the other victims, students, staff, faculty, parents, and administration, we stand with you. The scourge of violence on our hallowed grounds has stolen something from all of us, and that includes the alumni. We stand with you as we attempt to process what has happened and look for sustainable, impactful ways to up-level our support of students and the LU mission.

To alumni, so many of you have contacted me with the ranges of emotion I’ve described herein. As you know, there is an ongoing investigation, as well as a lot of emotional processing going on. We will work arm and arm with the university and students to look for ways to support them long-term. In the short run, ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH AT 3:30PM, I am calling the alumni body together to pray for peace, understanding, and strength as we process what has happened. Please register and attend. Also in the short term, the AALU has compiled a list of actions for your consideration. This list was compiled after asking students and University officials about how best to support at this trying time.

Also below, I share words of comfort from our National AALU Chaplain, Michael J. Canty, and a Letter from our university president, Dr. Brenda A. Allen, '81. Let us stand together against violence and lean on one another and on God because only the most powerful and unified love has the hope of conquering this nihilism. Let us all resolve to find that love and to seek and attain peace, understanding, and strength.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already Christmas Eve. I want to take just a moment to wish you happiness, peace, joy and yes HEALTH!

In this season of gratitude, I want to thank the Executive Committee, Alumni Council, and all Lions who have volunteered or in any way - large or small - to support the AALU to make 2021 a success. This gratitude extends over the previous and current administrations as we have all taken concrete steps to achieve our mission and advance and support the mission of Lincoln University.

I would say that 2021 brought unprecedented challenges, except that we saw these same challenges in 2020. Still, I cannot tell you how glad it makes me feel that we are figuring it out. From supporting the hybrid commencement in May and to our July 2021 in-person successful golf tournament to our (mostly) on-campus homecoming activities and arch rededication in October, we are meeting this moment in a way that keeps our alumni and campus community safe.

As the calendar turns to 2022, watch your email for the details! We will start with a New Year’s virtual prayer service to cover us. And we’ll move on to our in-person CIAA events, including a Day Party fundraiser; and then to a May commencement and Alumni weekend that we hope to be fully in person this year; and of course to our in-person July 2022 golf tournament. There is nothing quite like the energy and excitement created by Lions ROARING wherever we are. And while uncertainty certainly remains, we are committed to being stronger than ever.

So as the holidays approach, I hope you will take time to rest, relax and reconnect with family and loved ones. And, to the entire Lincoln University family — our President, Board of Trustees, students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends — I wish you a healthy and safe holiday season and a Happy New Year.

    Dear Lions:

#1 Thank you to all who a attended the AALU Homecoming meeting this past Saturday. There were so many great moments. The most important takeaway is that we are a Membership organization. Several Lions have passed away and others are dealing with grief and other challenges. Please keep your fellow Lions in your prayers and thoughts. The Chaplain and Programs Committee are planning an interfaith prayer service to support our membership in January 2022. More details to come.

We captured a few meeting screenshot photos: take a look!  We had a technical challenge that we resolved, but if you missed the meeting and you want to view the Members-only unlisted YouTube video, please reply to this message. We will send it to any National AALU financial member who missed the meeting for this reason.

    Other meeting takeaways:

    • Donate - President Brenda Allen launched the Promise Fund Initiative at Homecoming '21 to support LU. Dr. Allen has challenged us to find 1000 people to donate $1000 each to LU!

    • CIAA planning is on and Baltimore Metro Chapter (BMC) is ready to welcome us!!
      • Reserve your room by emailing rdaltonrann@lincoln.edu
      • Donate to BMC to to support the Athlete's reception on Tuesday, the Alumni welcome on Thursday and other events
      • Volunteer - BMC is coordinating volunteers for our hospitality suite. We need your help. Please email Lorella Dicks at BMC.AALU.CIAA@GMAIL.COM
      • Party & Fundraise - AALU is having a Saturday Day Party Fundraiser at Pickles Pub, 520 Washington Blvd. LU is hosting Jazz night and a farewell event party Saturday night. Details to follow.
